Ep66 - The Murder of Gloria Gaxiola

Screen Shot 2018-05-03 at 10.24.39 AM.png

This episode was recommended to us at the Gen Why meet up in LA by Laura, one of our awesome listeners. She recommended this case, and actually has a personal connection to it, because she knew the victim from school. So we just wanted to say a quick thank you to Laura for recommending the case to us!

This week we are discussing a case from southern California. Early in the morning on October 12th, 2002 a body of Gloria Gaxiola was found on the side of the road. She was initially believed to be the victim of a hit and run, but police quickly determined that what actually happened was much more horrific.

The body of the young woman was dragged behind a car for over 4 miles before being left on the side of the road. The murder seemed to be deeply personal, but the case was cold for years before investigators would catch a break.

This week we will discuss the crime, the victim, and possible motives for why this atrocious crime happened.

Ep64 - Todd Willingham

misconduct_ep064_promo1-3.jpeg

This week we are discussing the case of Cameron Todd Willingham. On December 23rd, 1991 neighbors reported seeing smoke coming from the Willingham household in Corsicana, Texas. Horrified, they watched 23 year old Todd Willingham emerge from the smoke filled entryway, but his three children, all under two years old, were nowhere to be found.

The fire department arrived and entered the house. They found the oldest child, unconscious in one of the rooms, but Todd’s twins were still missing. When the fire was finally extinguished, investigators recovered the bodies of the twins in their bedroom. Their older sister, who had been rescued from the fire, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Shortly after the fire was put out, Todd was arrested and charged with arson and the murder of his three young daughters. He was tried, convicted, and sentenced to death. Despite his conviction, Todd maintained he was not responsible for the fire that killed his children. He appealed until the end, and despite a last minute report casting doubt on the cause of the fire, Todd was put to death on February 17th, 2004.

After his death many have raised the question: did Texas execute an innocent man?

Ep62 - McStay Family Murders

Tonight we are talking about the McStay Family Murders.  Thank you Vanessa for another great suggestion!

On February 4th, 2010 Joseph, Summer and their two sons Gianni and Joseph Jr. vanished from their home in Fallbrook, CA.  Many family and friends tirelessly looked for the McStays, did interviews with news and overall kept some hope that they would be found eventually.

The family was considered missing until three years later when a motorcyclist riding dirt trials would come across the remains of four humans, two adults and two children, in a shallow grave.

The remains were identified as the McStay family and this once missing person case turned into a homicide case.  A year later, a once concerned family friend and business associate, who was active in the search for the family, would be arrested and face the death penalty for their murders.

Tonight we will take you through the McStay family’s disappearance, discovery, investigations and where the trial stands now.

Ep60 - Elton Manning Jackson

This episode was kind of a difficult one to write. This week we are talking about a serial killer who targeted open and closeted gay men in the 1980’s and 1990’s.

There are up to 12 victims attributed to the man responsible but not much is written about the perpetrator or the victims. Despite how prolific the case is, not much is known about the victims and the cases themselves weren’t connected by law enforcement until shortly before an arrest was made.

Ep59 - Chester Turner

So this week is going to tie back into our very first episode, which was a 2 part episode, on Lonnie David Franklin Jr. who is also known as the Grim Sleeper. He was a serial killer in South Central Los Angeles who was operating for over 20 years and for the bulk of that time, LA Police Department did not know he was actively killing women in his neighborhood.

The bulk of the murders committed by Lonnie Franklin and the person we are discussing today took place in the 80s and 90s. During this time, the crime rate in south LA was very high and the 1980s saw what we now refer to as the crack epidemic and the lasting effects of that bled over into the 1990s.

There was a huge increase in the number of missing and murdered black women in south LA during this time. So many of these women were turning up murdered in their own neighborhood that the community became concerned that there was a serial killer roaming the streets, but LAPD didn’t really investigate.

It wasn’t until the community came together and formed the Black Coalition Fighting Back Serial Murders and actively lobbied the LAPD to open an investigation.

To placate the Black Coalition Fighting Back Serial Murders, LAPD opened an investigation into the staggering number of deaths in the area. They quickly said, yes there is a serial killer operating in the area and dubbed this person “The South Side Slayer” and the case remained opened, but no progress was made. Only the body count increased.

At the time we recorded our first episode we were pretty flabbergasted that the community had to lobby the LAPD to do their jobs. After putting together this episode, we are still flabbergasted.

Even more disturbing the lack of action on the LAPD’s part exposed several glaring issues with their approach to dealing with this community. Many of the women who were murdered were assumed to be either addicted to drugs, specifically crack, a sex worker, or both.

Now, none of these things should affect how a murder is investigated, but it did. These cases were not taken seriously, in fact murders that involved victims that were perceived to be sex workers or drug addicts were written off as being quote “victims of circumstance” or they were victims of “their lifestyle”.

It also came out that police department in general, not just the LAPD, would refer to these cases as NHI cases and NHI refers to ‘no human involved’.

And this really set the mindset and tone of the situation. Communities in South LA have long had a contentious relationship with law enforcement, and for good reason.

The LAPD has a long history of excessive force when it isn’t needed and indifference when police investigation is necessary. Who do you call when you know the police won’t show up or won’t take your case seriously? Who do you call to report your loved one missing when you’re afraid their case won’t be treated seriously or investigated at all because of how they make their money or if they use drugs?

So that is an extremely brief history of some of the issues South LA faced when they were dealing with a spike in violent crime. It was this neglect that allowed for not one but multiple serial killers to operate unnoticed by everyone except the communities where the murders took place.

When she climbed the stairs, she found a horrific scene, Leslie and Adriane brutally murdered.

Ep57 - Cindy James

This week we are discussing the mysterious death of Cindy James. Cindy was living in Canada when she began receiving disturbing phone calls. Phone calls turned to threatening letters, and that turned into weird things happening at her home. These bizarre instances culminated in Cindy being attacked on five separate occasions over seven years.

Despite all of the contact that was being made with Cindy, police were unable to ever pinpoint a suspect. Police conducted multiple in depth investigations into who could be responsible, but again, no one was identified.

Cindy’s ordeal came to a tragic end 7 years after the first phone call, but many questioned remained. Most importantly, who was responsible for the Cindy’s harassment and ultimate death? And did she do this to herself? Or did the person responsible evade capture, despite the heavy police presence?

Ep55 - The Murder of Sandra Cantu

This topic was suggested to us by my roommate Austin, the one I went to Carmel with. I asked her for a case suggestion and she immediately said this one because it was a case that stuck with her. Once we got to researching, we quickly realized WHY it stuck with her.

This episode we will be discussing the abduction and murder of Sandra Cantu. Sandra vanished from the mobile home park where she lived with her family. With seemingly no leads, investigators worked tirelessly to find her.

With the accidental discovery of Sandra’s body the case shifted from a missing persons investigation to a homicide investigation. But the most shocking piece of the puzzle was yet to come. This week we will discuss the event surrounding Sandra’s disappearance, the extensive investigation, and the unlikely culprit.

Ep54 - Billy Glaze

This week we will be discussing a series of murders that happened in Minneapolis over a nine month period, from 1986-1987. Three women were found murdered near homeless encampments on the outskirts of downtown. All of the murders were eerily similar. All of the women were beaten, assaulted, and posed after their deaths. Also, all three victims were indigenous women and local to the area.

After the third victim was discovered, a task force was formed to try and identify the serial killer prowling the streets of Minneapolis. Police caught a break in the case and a suspect was arrested. By 1989, prosecutors secured their conviction and the case was considered close by law enforcement and the public.

Years later, with recanted testimony and new DNA testing abilities, the guilt of the person convicted was called into question. Did the state get it right the first time?  Or was the wrong person in prison for these heinous murders?

Ep53 - Cara Knott

On December 27th, 1986 20 year old Cara Knott was driving home from her boyfriend’s house; she called her father to let her know that she left and then she started the 45 minute drive home.

Cara never made it home, however.  The following day her car and body would be discovered under a bridge, by a desolate off-ramp off the 15 Freeway in San Diego County, CA.

The investigation into Cara’s murder will shine the light on a once respected CHP Officer’s disturbing pattern of behavior and bring justice and closure to Cara’s family.

Tonight we will take you through Cara’s murder, the investigation, conviction and after math of the murder of Cara Evelyn Knott.

Ep52 - Xiana Fairchild and Amber Swartz

In mid-August 2000 an 8 year old girl came running into traffic. She flagged down a car and quite literally jumped through the window. She said she had been kidnapped two days earlier. Hours later the man responsible was apprehended.

After his arrest, the man started talking. Soon the talking turned to confessions for not one but eight kidnappings and murders. Two of the murders the man confessed to were two high profile kidnappings from the Bay Area that had not been solved, and one was over 10 years old.

With a list of confessions and very little evidence to go on, investigators got to work trying to corroborate this man’s story. Did law enforcement accidentally stumble upon an active serial killer? Or was this the work of someone who confessed to crimes he didn’t commit to torture families of missing persons? This week we will discuss the circumstances around the arrest and subsequent investigations.

Ep49 - Covina Massacre

On the night of December 24th, 2008, a large family Christmas party was winding down. It had been another successful holiday party for the Ortega family, but shortly after 11:30 pm a man approached the residence. Once the door was opened, he forced himself in and started opening fire.

During the chaos, a call was placed to 911 that identified the shooter as the ex husband of one of the family members. Shortly after that, the house went up in flames and Pardo fled. By the end of the attack, 9 people would be dead at the hands of someone they knew. Bruce Jeffery Pardo had recently divorced his wife Sylvia and the house he attacked belonged to his ex in-laws.

By the time law enforcement tracked Pardo down, he was dead. He had killed himself shortly after the attack, but evidence showed suicide wasn’t his original plan.

Despite the divorce, anyone who knew the couple was taken aback by Pardo’s actions. Nothing about Pardo’s past suggested that he would commit such an atrocious crime, but it quickly became clear that he had been planning the attack for some time.

This week, we will go through the crime, the victims, and the man responsible. Personally, I find this case so disturbing because many of the warning signs you could look for were not there.

Ep48 - Henry Louis Wallace

This week we will be discussing Henry Louis Wallace. Wallace is a serial killer who operated in Charlotte, North Carolina in the early 1990s. This is another case, where we see how crimes are treated different across racial lines.

Wallace’s victims were African American. He killed in the area for nearly 2 years before he was caught, but police weren’t actively pursuing a serial killer until 3 days before Wallace was arrested.

This week, we will talk about who Henry Louis Wallace is, and more importantly, who his victims were, and how he was able to evade capture for 22 months.

Ep47 - Kevin Cooper

This week we are discussing Kevin Cooper, an African American man who was convicted in a quadruple homicide of a white family in Chino Hills, California in 1983. Kevin Cooper was found guilty and sentenced to death for the horrific crime. After his conviction, many questions were raised about his involvement.

On death row since the 80’s, many people have spoken out on behalf of Kevin and their belief in his innocence. This week we will discuss the crime that put him in prison, the evidence that put him there, and what evidence is disputed.

Is Kevin Cooper guilty? Or is the state of California keeping an innocent man on death row? The one thing we know for sure about this case, is there aren’t many clear cut answers.

No matter what side of the issue you find yourself on, this case is extremely controversial and raises questions about the death penalty in the United States.
